On Marketing, Leadership & Empathy

empathy leadership marketing

I’m so excited to tell you about a couple of recent interviews because I know it will help to inspire so many others!

I had a BLAST on both shows.

In Some Countries, It’s Called Kidnapping…

In my interview with Steph Blake, we talk about my journey into entrepreneurship. From Peace Corps to grad school to executive leadership at the City of Portland and, ultimately, my accidental plunge into entrepreneurship.

If you’ve ever felt a twinge of fear before doing something new, you’ll love this show because it’s solely focused on inspiring and motivating other business owners; how cool is that?!

During my interview, we talked about how I met my best friend in Kazakhstan (hint: it’s related to the kidnapping comment above).

This isn’t something I talk about often, but I love what Steph is doing with this podcast and knew I would be able to inspire others with my story.

A Casualty of Poor Leadership

If you want to learn about when ultimately PUSHED me to start my own business, continue to the Talk Commerce show with Brent Peterson.

I love Brent because he loves dad jokes. And great leadership.

Most of you probably don’t know I have a master’s in leadership and management.

Few people know what led me to leave the golden handcuffs of an executive role without a safety net.

We start talking a little about Peace Corps before diving into quiet quitting, dealing with narcissistic leaders, and how younger generations work differently (and how we can best support them!).

While I don’t remember using the word empathy in the interview, my philosophy is deeply rooted in compassion.

If you feel called to hear about leadership, I’d love you to listen to the episode.

What I’m reading

Braving the Wilderness, Brené Brown. Fun fact: this is the first book I’ve read by her. I loved her TED Talk about the Power of Vulnerability, but until now I never felt called to go deeper. If you’ve ever felt like you don’t belong (and you’re not sure you want to) this book is for you.

Everybody Writes (2nd Edition), Ann Handley. When my preorder arrived earlier than expected, a joyful shriek escaped my lips. I’m a writing nerd who’s offended by crummy copy. Handley creates a fun and accessible way to improve your business writing.
